The DMK Alkaline Wash is specifically designed for fine, downy facial hair. This type of hair is very difficult to treat with electrolysis or IPL because it is usually dense, the follicles are small and it involves a great amount of time. The advantage of Alkaline Wash is that it is possible to remove large areas of hair in one treatment, with little to no discomfort.
What is alkaline hair removal and how does it work?
Alkaline Wash is an alkaline powder that is mixed into a paste and then applied to the desired area for a short period of time. The time depends on the coarseness of the hair.
The treatment is not like a regular hair removal cream, it is of a much higher pH, which aims to swell the hair shaft and, as it dissolves the hair, some of the solution enters the hair shaft, damaging and weakening the papilla which the hair grows from. This aims to reduce hair regrowth.
After the first treatment hair will grow back at its normal rate, but as treatments progress the rate of regrowth will lessen, usually resulting in a reduction of hair growth and some permanent hair loss over a period of time.
Common questions:
Q. How many treatments will I need before the hair is permanently removed?
A. It is impossible to estimate how many treatments are required as permanent hair removal is dependent upon a number of factors i.e. how the hair has been previously treated, how long the hair growth has been there, reasons for the hair growth etc. Some clients report a reduction in hair growth after just one treatment; however there is no guarantee as every client's skin is different.
Q. How long does the treatment take?
A. The treatment usually takes approximately half an hour.
Q. Will this harm my skin?
A. Alkaline Wash is used in skin treatments to remove dead cell material from the surface, so this gentle exfoliation will actually benefit your skin. Although your skin may feel a bit dry a day or two after the treatment this is normal and is not harmful to your skin.
Q. Are there any side effects?
A. Usually after the initial treatment before the skin has adjusted to alkaline, you may experience some redness or dryness. Your DMK Technician will be able to give you an idea of what you can expect as everyone is different.
Q. What areas can be treated with Alkaline Wash?
A. Alkaline Wash can be used on any hair growth, although for reasons of cost, we mainly perform the treatment on the face, lip, chin, bikini and underarm. Alkaline Wash is also very good for treating ingrown hairs and areas of pigmentation from waxing, or scars. On very coarse hair it can be used in conjunction with electrolysis.
