Everything you know about
sunscreen may be wrong!

There is a disturbing level of confusion about sun protection, so in an attempt to save your skin, here are some facts & common misconceptions explained.

Before we begin, take a look at the skin on your underarm area… that is what your skin would look like all over your body if you “never go out in the sun” *

Now I know we live in sunny Queensland & we love to be outdoors, but to avoid the skin cancers, we have to get SMART about sun protection. So many parents slather sunscreen on their children, & then forget themselves. You need a broad spectrum SPF30 free of oils, alcohol & perfumes. We recommend DMK Transdermal Sunbloc. It is non greasy, can be worn under make-up & is suitable for men, women & children. It penetrates into the voids of the skin instead of simply sitting on the surface. Well priced & available in 60ml for $25 & 120ml for $43.

Broad Spectrum means blocking UVA (ageing rays) AND UVB (burning rays). The guideline requirement for manufacturers of sunscreens is at least 1/3 UVA protection factor to 2/3 UVB protection factor. That means that in a SPF30, you are receiving only a factor 10 for UVA & a factor 30 for UVB.
I wish I had known that when I was younger!!

MYTH 1
I never go out in the sun*

I hear this so often! But the same person saying that will have severe sun damage on the face, arms & décolletage. “Going out in the sun” seems to imply going to the beach or swimming pool, however the following activities all involve going out in the sun: Hanging out washing, gardening, having a chat to the neighbours, walking the children to & from school, chatting to other mums while waiting for the children, watching sports, early morning walks, sitting in a café or similar IN THE SHADE & then... the sun moves and next thing you know you are being burned.

MYTH 2
You can be in the sun all day as long as you reapply your sunscreen.

You need to reapply every 2 hours of time, and immediately after swimming or surfing but once you have reached your limit of time in the sun, no amount of reapplying will protect you from burning. If you normally take 10 minutes to burn without sunscreen, & you use a SPF30 you can stay in the sun for 300 minutes (that’s 5 hours – reapplying twice in that time)… after that, get yourself out of the sun!!!

MYTH 3
You only need a small amount of sunscreen
.

You need at least a golf ball size of lotion (or several thick layers of a spray) for your body..
Most of us use about ¼ of this, effectively turning the SPF30 into a Factor 7 UVB & Factor 2 UVA. Always apply 20 minutes before going outside but for your skins sake, if you haven’t 20 minutes to prepare & apply, just DO IT ANYWAY before going outside. Wear your sunscreen, a hat & really big sunglasses.

MYTH 4
My moisturiser has a SPF 15 so I don’t need a sunscreen.

Face and body creams with a SPF 15 are for short periods of time only. PLUS you need to reapply, & it is more convenient, practical and effective to carry a purse size SPF 30 to reapply.

MYTH 5
I won’t ever get skin cancer.

Every year nearly 400,000 Australians are treated for Skin Cancer. Skin cancer can kill you.

BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS!!!

Wear sunscreen daily and reapply regularly. Be REALLY vigilant with your sunscreen and you WILL reverse the damage to some extent. Your skin cells will heal & reproduce healthier skin cells. You will look younger, prevent skin cancers & therefore live longer.
